1980-81 Football Season – First Division Finishes

The English Football Premier League was formed in 1980 when the Football League European Division was introduced. It is the highest division of the English soccer association and is divided into ten teams. Every team plays against every other team in a round-robin system. This means that each team gets three chances to play against each other.

Since this was the first division, there were some very good teams in it, including Watford, Millwall, Wolves, Crystal Palace and Rangers. However, since there was only one championship, the contenders started to fade. This was not surprising, as the newcomers, mostly from the lower league, had little chance of winning. However, there were some decent teams in the competition, especially during the early years.

As English football got more competitive, the English football premiership became more widely played. In the United Kingdom itself, there are now around thirteen clubs in the third division. This was surprising since, at the time, the country was still divided between the rest of the countries. But since the rest of the countries gained independence later on, now the top division can be considered the English league.

First Division Teams

The 1980-81 football league first division was defined as the “Playoff Club” and featured four teams; the MetroStars, Southwestern Conference, Western Conference and the Presidents’ Cup. The Presidents’ Cup is the only club that has never won the entire league. The teams earn points by winning games, and those points are added up for the purpose of earning a playoff berth. In the first year of this format, no team earned more than the team with the best regular-season record.

The first season was a very competitive one with many great contenders to claim the division title. The West Division was very close, featuring two teams that finished in the top five of the polls. The Presidents’ Cup was also a battle between two teams from the same conference, and there were some high-profile matches between these two.

The season opened with the MetroStars taking on the Presidents’ Cup champion from the same conference. The Presidents’ Cup was not an easy task because it was the highest voted team ever and was won by the Presidents’ Cup champions from the same conference. The MetroStars were a heavy favourite to win the whole thing, but they lost in the final minutes. Things were looking good for the teams in the Western Conference, who were the runners up to the Presidents’ Cup. However, two teams from the West got knocked out in the first round.

The teams in the first division all hoped that the next season would be better and that they could make a push to the Championship. The Presidents’ Cup was also an exciting season because there were a number of high-profile matches between the best teams in the country. However, this season ended with the same team from the first division winning the trophy. The teams in the first division still had a long way to go to become a dominant force in the football league.

The season was not without its ups and downs for the teams finishing in the first place. There were players who became stars overnight. The Presidents’ Cup champions from the West had a chance to prove to everyone that they were indeed legitimate contenders in the league. Unfortunately, the bad season just didn’t end for these teams. Some even went into disarray and even had a worse off-season than the year before.

A lot of the problems began with a team in the West that was known as the Dallas Cowboys. They had gone to the playoffs the previous three years but suffered terrible injuries to key players such as Len Bell, Craig Dalmas and tackle Orlando Pace. This team just didn’t look like it would contend for another division title any time soon. They finished the season in the last place, missing the playoffs for only the third time in the seven-year history of the NFL.

Another team that had a bright future in the NFL was the Miami Dolphins. They had finally entered the postseason for the third time after missing the previous two seasons. The exciting new quarterback that started the season proved to be nothing more than a good player, and the team’s chances of winning were slipping away. They ended the season in the last place. The same happened to the previously mentioned Cowboys.

About Watney Football Club

Watney’s dominance in the first season of the 1980-81 football league first division is not quite as impressive as it was during their first year in the old Third Division when they reached the playoffs and beat eventual champions Wolves. This was a bigger feat in those days, as now we are talking about a side that reached the knockout stages of the FA Cup. Although they lost in the final, their performance demonstrated to the football public and their fans that Watney was a force to be reckoned with in the premiership.

Despite finishing in third place, the following season proved a different story. Watney once again won the FA Cup and qualified for the semis, only to lose to eventual winners Arsenal in the semis. They then suffered a defeat to eventual cup finalists Manchester United in the semi-final, before being knocked out at the hands of Celtic in the final. This was a bad omen for the club, who missed out on the chance of a European title.

Unfortunately for Watney, they did not sign any of the players who were sold to Celtic, and they missed out on a chance to reclaim their first division title. Unfortunately for them, the following season proved to be their golden age, as they won four trophies in five seasons. They even reached the European finals before being knocked out by eventual winners Benfica. This was to be their last season in the top flight, and although they did not manage to win another trophy, they secured themselves third in the table. This was enough for the club, and its supporters, to believe that they were a success.

The Role of David James in Watney

Then, disaster struck. Two more of Watney’s talons were sold to non-league clubs in the UK, leaving the club with just one player in David James, who was no longer the best player at the time. David James was sold to non-league Bristol City. Watney, despite winning the previous season of the first division, found it very difficult to replace David James. Their other centre forwards were not up to the task, as they lacked the quality and stamina that David James provided. So, as the season ended, they slipped three points lower than the previous season at the bottom of the table.

Things did not get much better for Watney. In the next season of the first division, they made a huge move to move into the top division. Unfortunately for them, they lost two of their first-team players to injury during pre-season training, and they missed out on earning a promotion to the second division. They also lost out on gaining a place in the automatic qualification for the European soccer qualifying tournament. Things were not looking good for David James and his Watney followers.

But what they didn’t know was that the worst was yet to come for Watney. As the season wound down, they discovered that they were only two points off of a third place, but that was as far as they would go. They slipped four points further, into fourth place behind eventual champions Leeds United, and that was agonizing for the fans who believed that Watney was destined to be one of the very best teams in the first division. Things would hardly get any better until the unthinkable happened, and David James was let go by Watney Town.
